Celebrate U Day features SafetySuit
The Second Chance Foundation of Utah is hosting “Celebrate U,” on Saturday, Sept. 18 at Utah Valley University.
Celebrate U is a self-esteem building, suicide prevention day that will feature the popular band SafetySuit and will be free of charge.
Suicide is the leading cause of death among teenagers and adults under 35. There are an estimated 10 to 20 million non-fatal attempted suicides every year worldwide.
In Utah, there are more than six suicides every week and more than five are attempted each day.
“This is an amazing opportunity to hear one of the hot new bands not only perform live, but to talk about suicide prevention and why every life matters,” said Neil K. Warner, Second Chance Foundation of Utah President. “This is a rare event. You just don’t get to hear bands of this caliber in such an intimate setting very often. I believe most of us know someone who has suffered with depression or low self-esteem. This event could be life-changing for them.”
SafetySuit will by the keynote speaker and perform some acoustical songs at 5 p.m. at the UVU Activity Center. The band’s debut CD is titled, “Life Left to Go,” and was released in 2008. It featured two top 40 hits in “Someone Like You,” and “Stay,” which was No. 1 on VHI’s top 20 video countdown.
“It’s ( the CD) was named after our last song on the record, which is our least commercial song ever. It chronicles the thoughts of someone who wants to end their life. Then it presents the counter of that, the person begging them to stay,” said lead singer Doug Brown in the band’s bio. “It’s a song to let people know that, no matter what, somebody notices them, that someone cares.”

Later that night SafetySuit will perform a concert in the McKay Events Center at 7:30 p.m. Joining SafeySuit will be The Wayne Hoskins Band, Winners of the 2009 Posty for “Best Utah Rock Band.” The Wayne, based locally in the Salt Lake Valley, is serious about their music, their fans and supporting worthy causes.
With music described as “edgy, driving and elegant,” the band was recently approached by a boutique record label to begin their next project — a full length studio album, set to release in late 2010.
